Musee de Cluny
Superb museum of the Middle Ages
6 place Paul-Painleve, 5e. Behind the splendid Flamboyant Gothic facade of the abbots of Cluny’s Latin Quarter residence, the national museum of the Middle Ages (www.musee-moyenage.fr) is one of the best in the world. Beautiful gold and silver ware, suits of armour, reliquaries and stained glass are augmented by a stunning array of medieval tapestries, notably the exquisite La Dame a la Unicorne. Six panels of exceptional virtuosity celebrate the senses in a bouquet of delicate flowers, animals, birds, and the dame herself accompanied by a lion and fey, smiling unicorn.
Adjacent to the Hotel de Cluny, the excavated remains of a Romar bath complex reveal a vaulted frigidarium.
