Nambour

A small rural town

On Bruce Highway 60 km north of Brisbane. This small rural town is surrounded by sugar plantations. Nearby, they also grow (and manufacture) pineapples. You want to know what a manufactured pineapple looks like? Head 6 km south of town and you come to the Big Pineapple (www.bigpineapple.com.au), a 15-m-high fruit made of plastic. Inside you can learn all about how real pineapples are grown, but otherwise it’s little more than a bloated photo opportunity. (Angle your camera so that the spiky leaves appear to fountain out of your victim’s head.) Six km north of town stands the rival Big Cow. This unlikely pair have proved unexpectedly fertile, giving birth to a local population explosion of oversized progeny – including a giant lawnmower, monstrous shell, and a bottle of beer the size Aussies dream about (alas, empty).
