Norcia
Religious, artistic and gastronomic centre
An important art centre, walled, aggressively medieval in idyllic surroundings. It’s the birthplace of St Benedict and a Bendictine monastery still thrives here. Gastronomes equate Norcia with truffles. At Serravalle, 6 km west, you find tranquillity and an Arcadian valley accompanying Route 320 to Cascia and beyond. Both towns are holiday resorts and hang-gliding centres. Strong walkers should try Norcia-Ospedaletto and Cascia-Roccaporena, both six hours return. Free pocket-sized itineraries and maps from Cascia tourist office.
About 45 minutes from Norcia is the Piano Grande, possibly Europe’s largest high-level plateau, a fascinating place covered with wild and cultivated flowers from spring to autumn. The overlooking village of Castelluccio di Norcia has restaurants and places to stay.
