Northwest Island
Largest of the Capricorn group
70 km north east of Gladstone. This is the largest cay in the Capricorn Group, but is completely undeveloped. Campers are strictly limited to 150, must have a permit (www.nprsr.qld.gov.au), and must bring everything with them.
If you don’t fancy camping, it’s possible to get here by boat for a day trip. For boat information, see www.curtisferryservices.com.au. The island is renowned for its variety of birdlife, and its excellent diving. Like other remote and undeveloped islands in the Capricorn group, it is closed from time to time for regeneration.
