Ostiglia
Ancient river crossing
The Roman general Hostilius fortified this river crossing, hence its name. Fifteen centuries later the Gonzaga, della Scala and Visconti princes were wrangling over it. Ancient relics are nil, but the Town Hall facade, said to be by Piermarini, is worth a look. A Romanesque sanctuary on the edge of town, the Madonna della Comune, has a charming flower-painted ceiling.
