Palais de Chailllot
Four museums under one roof
place du Trocadéro, 16e. Built for the 1878 Paris Exhibition, the Neoclassical palais sits on the Right Bank with an uninterrupted view of the Tour Eiffel across the Seine. Four museums are gathered under the one roof: the excellent Musée de I’Homme (www.museedlhomme.fr) with its anthropological collections; maritime history and stirring seascapes by artists such as Joseph Vernet housed in the Musée national de la Marine (www.musee-marine.fr); and the terrific Musée des Monuments Fran√笵cais. The latter contains not one original work of art, but beautifully constructed plaster models of great moments in French sculpture and copies of antique frescoes. It sounds awful, but it is amazingly effective. The photo shows the Palais from the fountain pool of the Trocadero.
