Off Hwy-1, 16 miles South of Carmel. Set on a tall basalt outcrop and operational since 1889, Point Sur Lighthouse originally utilized a whale-oil lantern to ward ships away from what was known to seafarers as the Graveyard of the Pacific. The lighthouse still earns its keep, these days automatically with a computer-controlled beam.
