Polistena

Easter parades

One of a trio of hill towns (with Cittanova and Taurianova) built in Baroque and Renaissance styles after the 1783 earthquake. Citizens still cross themselves when walking their streets. Elaborate parades of ‘mysteries’ (Biblical effigies) here at Easter with penitenti enthusiastically brandishing whips, broken bottles and thorns.
