Pomposa

Deserted Benedictine abbey

On Route 309, 45 km south of Chioggia. This Benedictine abbey, deserted by its monks, remained unregarded for two centuries. Now the touring buses bring crowds to stand in silent awe before wonderful frescos and mosaics by Emilian disciples of Giotto. The 11thC campanile is 55 km high. Ten kilometres into the Po delta the circular village of Mesola hangs to the skirts of an Estensi (Este family) hunting-lodge – another wonder of this little lost world.
