A dull town, though a useful transport hub for the region and the Jura ski resorts to the south around Mont d’Or. The skiing here is easy to intermediate, worth considering for complete beginners, but not if you’ve already experienced mainstream Alpine resorts. One local distraction is the eagle’s nest stronghold of Fort de Joux (5 km south, off the D437), which houses a ferocious weaponry museum on a crag above the dramatic Cluse-et-Mijoux chasm.
