The Great Dolomites Highway runs east from here to Cortina d’Ampezzo along the Val Gardena. The valley is typical of the area, woods and meadows and great masses of rock overhanging a wide road which is joy to drive if you can adapt to the speeding BMWs. Villages along this valley go in for Cembra (name of a dale) pinewood carving, largely of religious statuettes, a traditional cottage industry which has suffered from commercialization.
