Port Lincoln
Tuna fishing centre
350 km south west of Port Augusta at the end of the Eyre Peninsula. This is the main tuna fishing centre in Australia, and the largest town on the Eyre Peninsula, with a permanent population of around 14,000. The start of the tune fishing season in January is marked with a wild Tunarama Festival, which attracts revellers as far away as Adelaide and helps Port Lincoln earn the title ‘Seafood Capital of Australia’ (www.tunarama.net).
There are a number of old buildings, including Mill Cottage which dates from 1866, and the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum (www.axelstenross.com.au).
Try a cruise to the Neptune Islands Marine Park that is a haunt of the notorious great white shark (try Calypso Star Charters; www.sharkcagediving.com.au)
Cape Carnot, to the south-west, has some spectacular scenery where the ocean rollers explode through a number of blowholes.
