Puy de Dome
Much visited dormant volcano
One of the most-visited spots in the region, this 1,465-m sawn-off volcano is the tallest link in the Monts Dômes chain. A toll road winds up around its wooded flanks, or alternatively there is a footpath from the lower car park to the remains of a Roman temple dedicated to Mercury. A radio mast and café do little to improve the summit, but the magnificent views stretch for miles in every direction.
