Riquewihr
Charming vineyard village
www.ribeauville-riquewihr.com. A tiny little village almost submerged in the folds of its famous vineyards, Riquewihr is utterly charming but completely over-run by tourists in the summer. Behind the quaint cobbled main street lined with caves tucked into medieval and Renaissance houses, lie alleys and courtyards festooned with geraniums and creepers. The village also boasts the best collection of decorative wrought-iron hanging signs along the Wine Route. A little train does the rounds from May to November, but it is more interesting to explore on foot. There is a clutch of small museums: local history in the 13thC Tour du Dolder; a dungeon and torture chamber in the Tour des Voleurs (Thieves’ Tower), part of the old city walls; and a postal museum in the 16thC Château.
