Ronchamp
A fine 20thC church
In complete contrast to Vauban’s demonstration of military might (see Belfort, this section), there is a rare example of inspired 20thC ecclesiastical architecture in Le Corbusier’s Chapelle de Notre-Dame-du-Haut, at Ronchamp (21 km NW of Belfort via the N19). Perched above the town on a wooded hill, its concrete curves are arranged around flat white walls pierced with unmatching windows like a ticker-tape code. The Spartan interior is lit by shafts of primary reds, blues and yellows filtered tiirough glass.
In the same direction, but via the more northerly D13, lies the Etang de Malsancy for swimming and watersports.
