The picture-postcard Dordogne village, with its yellow-ochre cottages plastered against the cliff face and reflected in the slow-flowing river. Clamber up the narrow cobbled streets laid out on ramps and terraces to the troglodyte dwellings carved into the cliff. For the best views, take a canoe, kayak or taxi rowing boat across to the little island in midstream. Local canoe operators can also arrange day and half-day canoe trails with outward transport, then paddle back to La Roque.
