Home / Italy / Exploring locally / South-East of Rome: the Pontine Way / Sabaudia

Sabaudia

Eight-km lido

The small town was built on reclaimed land in 1934 when the Circeo National Park came into being. Its lido extends about 8 km along the coast and to get to it you have to cross Lake Paola, which winds round the town. Most summer Sundays they have motorboat races on this lake. On its eastern shore is the Fount of Lucullus, a mineral water spring from ancient times. There is still something desolate about this shoreline where snake-infested, fever-ridden swamp land once oozed into the sea.
