Saint-Jean-du-Gard
Delightful village
See www.france-voyage.com. This delightful Cévenole village at the southern end of the Corniche des Cévennes was the final destination of Robert Louis Stevenson on his Travels with a Donkey, a published account of his 190-km hike across the Cévennes. A small museum, the Musée des Vallées Cévenoles/Musee virtuel de Protestantisme (95 Grand’Rue) provides a gentle introduction to local history and traditional industries from the cultivation of silk worms to sweet chestnuts. During the season, a steam train (photo) runs south through fine scenery to Anduze.
