From Cambo-les-Bains, the D918 makes a lovely 35-km drive south-east to St-Jean-Pied-de-Port. On the way, stop off in Itxassou with its pretty church. Carry on from there, if you feel inclined, across the Pas de Roland to Artzamendi (very difficult road) for a fantastic panorama at 926 m. Retrace to the D918 – the road parallels the course of the River Nive (famous for trout fishing) – and continue in the direction of Saint-Jean.
