San Andreas
Historic court house
San Andreas’s greatest day came in 1883 when legendary frontier outlaw Black Bart was tried and sentenced at the town’s County Courthouse, an immaculately restored building which now serves as the Calaveras County Historical Museum and Archives. Known as ‘the poet laureate of outlawry,’ Black Bart relieved 28 Wells Fargo stagecoaches of their gold between 1875 and 1883 and usually left a self-penned poem at the scene of the crime. Imprisoned for five years, after his San Andreas trial, Bart kept a low profile following his release and was rumoured to be receiving a pension from Wells Fargo on the understanding that he never steal from them again.
