San Gimignano
Much-visited medieval hill town
The fame of this ‘town of 100 towers’ has spread worldwide and the result is crowds, vulgarity and overpriced souvenirs. The town is ringed with car parks and no vehicles are allowed in the historic centre. The Collegiata and Sant’ Agostino churches have frescos by Ghirlandaio and Benozzo Gozzoli respectively. A macabre attraction is the Inquisition or Medieval Criminology Museum, a small chamber of horrors on Via del Castello.
