Santa Paula

The ‘Citrus Capital of the World’

On Hwy-126, 15 miles East of Ventura. It is dubbed the ‘Citrus Capital of the World’ for their production of oranges and lemons, though more recently avocados have been planted and are now a booming yummy-mummy business, and an avocado has been added to the official town seal.

Using computer simulations and a working model of an oil rig, Santa Paula’s California Oil Museum (http://www.caoilmuseum.org) describes the discovery of oil in California and the subsequent rise of the state’s oil industry. Predictably, it is a celebratory display and from it you wouldn’t suspect that drilling for oil (and particularly offshore drilling) is one of the hottest environmental issues in California.

Several Hollywood movies, and TV series have been filmed in Santa Paula over the years, though nothing worth any merit.
