Santa Severa

Ancient Etruscan seaport

Palm-trees on the shore and a burly Odescalchi castle distinguish this small resort from a score of others on the flat Tyrrhenian strand. From the castle you can walk to the excavations at Pyrgi, a one-time Etruscan seaport. It flourished from the 7thC to 3rdC BC, when the Romans took over. Two temples have been identified and their clay decorations and friezes are in the Villa Giulia in Rome, along with the most sensational discovery: three golden sheets with bilingual (Phoenician and Etruscan) inscriptions which have enabled scholars to move deeper into the mysteries of the Etruscan language.
