Seui
Mountain village in brigand country
Typical mountain village in the depths of historic brigand country, the Barbagio Seulo. Major event of the day is the arrival of the train (see Trenino Verde, above). A mild climate favours this wine-producing area. Seui at 800 m is dominated by Gennargentu, as high again. Eating places make the most of the agri-pastoral economy: a country cuisine.
This is the midpoint of a spectacularly hairpinned mountain road between Mandas and Lanusei, along which villages cling precariously to cliff walls. Now and again they fall: Gairo Vecchia, 36 km east, is deserted by inhabitants who, tired of seeing their cottages slide down the mountain, built new homes on flatter ground.
