Silverton

Ghost town

25 km north west of Broken Hill. This is the original Aussie ghost town, which has become so famous that it isn’t really a ghost town any more. But at least it looks like one. And it probably did to you, too, when you saw the movies Mad Max II, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and Mission Impossible II, which were all filmed here, along with innumerable advertisements featuring the Australian outback.

This spot once had a population of 3,000, then the silver ran out in 1889. Look over the local jail, with its mementoes of the good old days, take a camel ride around town, then head a further 15 km down the road to the Umber-umberka Reservoir for a picnic.
