Staircase to the moon
At full moon on a cloudless night…
This phenomenon occurs at certain points along the coast here. When the full moon rises on a cloudless night, its reflection across the gently rippling shallows of the mudflats appears like a golden stairway. You will find this effect either wonderfully romantic or mystifyingly banal – either way, the locals use it as a great excuse for a celebration.
The best places to see it are from the town beach jetty at Broome (at the end of Robinson Street) or Reader’s Point Lookout at Cossack. Witness the phenomenon, and you will discover that wolves and coyotes are not the only species which bay at the moon. At Broome, they also hold a market.
