Home / Italy / Exploring locally / North-West of Rome: Etruscan homeland / Sutri

Sutri

Ancient origins

Quaint little town of tufa-built medieval and Renaissance buildings. The Roman amphitheatre, also dug out of tufa, must originally have been Etruscan. The small chapel of the Madonna del Parto (childbirth madonna to whom many pregnant women pay their devotions) was formerly a Mithraic temple, before that an Etruscan tomb.
