Terracina
1stC BC temple ruins
Another old, good-looking town, clambering shorewards from the hills. The paving of a Roman forum survives. San Cesario’s cathedral (11thC) has bright mosaic-tiled floors. There are ruins of a 1stC BC temple to Jupiter Anxur (Anxur was the town’s original name). An immense rock, Pisco Montano, 100 m high, disfigures the shore. The sandy beach west, well furnished with campsites and caravan parks, extends almost to San Felice Circeo 17 km away.
If you are returning to Rome from Terracina, take the fast inland highways 7 via Velletri or 148 via Latina (108 km); or the more interesting 156 through Priverno and Sezze.
