Sydney can lay claim with a strong argument for being considered as one of the gay capitals of the world. The main scene is along Oxford Street (known locally as the Golden Mile) in Paddington, and Darlinghurst, south of Kings Cross. The lesbian scene focuses on Leichhardt (known by its fans as Dyke-heart) as well as Paddington and Darlinghurst.

The big event of the gay year (see photo) is the Sydney Lesbian and Gay Mardi Gras (www.mardigras.org.au), which attracts crowds from all over the gay globe. This takes place throughout February, with parades, a film festival and all kinds of cultural events.
