The Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park

Renowned for bush trails

West of Western Highway near Ararat. These mountains form the southern end of the Great Dividing Range. The Grampians National Park (www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/grampians-national-park) is renowned for its bushwalks, wildlife, mountain scenery, waterfalls and Aborigine art. In spring the mountainsides are covered with flowers.

The Visitor Information Centre is on Grampians Road, Halls Gap. Here you can pick up details of the many long and short walks which criss-cross the region. Some of the most accessible walks start from Halls Gap. It is also possible to see much of the national park by car.

Just south-west of Halls Gap is the Wonderland Range. This contains the Pinnacles, a superb look-out, and close by is the famous Nerve Test  – a ledge which has spectacular views for those who can keep their eyes open.

Drive to the Reed Lookout, and from here it’s just 1-km walk to the balconies, a series of stepped ledges above a truly breathtaking drop, known locally, with good reason, as the Jaws of Death.

The Victoria Range, in the western region of the Grampians, is renowned for its many Aborigine rock paintings. Quantity rather than quality is the name of the game here, but this somehow increases their eeriness.
