The Wandjina
Ancestor beings of the Aborigines
The Aborigine art of the Kimberley is renowned for its depiction of The Wandjina, mysterious beings who control the elements. They are ancestor beings of the Aborigines, who originally came from the sky. A Wandjina is usually painted in human form with black skin and an oval mark on his chest, but has no mouth. Around his head is a halo, which is both his hair and the clouds he controls. The Wandjina appear in many early Aboriginal rock paintings found in the Kimberley, where they are often depicted as giants.
A Jungian psychiatrist has recently claimed that the Wandjina are analagous to the spirits which evolved, in the Western psyche, into the Ancient Greek gods.
