Timber Creek
Base for the Gregory National Park
On Victoria Highway 285 km west of Katherine. Timber Creek consists of little more than the old police station (now a museum), a pub and a tourist office. The last used to be inhabited before he retired by the redoubtable Max, who ran a boat trip down the Victoria River. The main feature of this trip was Max himself, but the crocs, turtles, local legends (and a few local facts) were also allowed a look in. Alas, we can’t trace what has become of Max.
South of here, for 150 km, runs the Judbarra/Gregory National Park. You can drive for 50 km or so down the road (further if you have a 4WD). Here there’s a trail which leads through spectacular remote scenery past a pool which provides the only safe swimming in the park, unless you fancy youself as a Crocodile Dundee.
