Topanga Canyon
Hippiedom alive and well
Sixties California hippiedom is alive and well and living next door to 1990s New Age pursuits in Topanga Canyon, a rustic village on Hwy-27 (which cuts inland from Topanga Beach) dominated by health food restaurants, handicraft shops and esoteric bookstores. It was in Topanga Canyon that some of LA’s psychedelic musical gurus –Canned Heat, Spirit, the Byrds among them – either lived, played or partied and made the most of bucolic surroundings only a few minutes’ drive from the clubs of Sunset Strip. The hillsides above the community make up Topanga State Park, 9,000 acres of tree-and chaparral-coated hillsides with hiking trails rising to breath-taking views of ocean, mountains, and the enormous flat basin which holds the conglomeration of LA.
