Tremiti Islands
Off the Gargano promontory
Tremiti is a corruption of Diomede, the Greek hero who came home from Troy to find his wife unfaithful. He wandered away with two companions; the gods took pity and changed them into seabirds. Alighting, they became islands. This is one version of the Tremiti group’s origins. The limestone trio, 33 km from the Gargano promontory, comprise San Nicola with its castellated abbey, San Domino with pinewoods and steep cliffs and Caprara with sea caves remarkable for their rainbow tints. Their waters yield excellent mullet, lobster and sea trout, said to feed on sea-bed carpets of violets. Sub-aqua championships are held, the hydrofoils and ferries come and go from Ortona, Vasto, Termoli and the Gargano, but for much of the year two of the isles are oases of silence. On San Domino there are hotels, a campsite and a tourist village.
