Tulare
Local history museum
On Hwy-99, 46 miles South of Fresno. Anxious to entice passing tourists, dot-on-the-map Tulare spent half-a-million dollars on its Tulare Historical Museum (www.tularehistoricalmuseum.org), 444 W. Tulare Avenue, during the 1980s. Money cannot buy history, though, and the collections don’t differ wildly from those in any other Central Valley museum. The diorama of a Yokut Indian village carries some interest, however, and you should also look out for Chum, a fox terrier belonging to an early Tulare surgeon who frequently accompanied his master to the operating theatre: both Chum and master are dutifully re-created in wax.
