Tuscania
Substantial remains
Huddled on a hilltop in lonely country between two river gorges. Though damaged by earthquake, there are substantial Roman and medieval remains. The Etruscan finds are in the museum next to St Peter’s church and the numerous ‘rocky necropoli’ from which they have come are scattered within a 2- to 3-km radius of the town, picturesquely wedged against cliffs beneath tangles of undergrowth. The big cube-shaped Peschiera tomb dates back to the 6thC BC.
