Udine
One of Italy’s most beautiful squares
Venice has left her mark on this graceful city which traditionally occupies a mound that Attila the Hun built for a viewpoint. The medieval castle, several times rebuilt, now houses the city museum and galleries of ancient and modern art (see www.civicimuseiudine.it). Piazza della Liberità, one of Italy’s most beautiful squares, with arcades and porticoes, has on it a 13thC cathedral with paintings by Tiepolo and the elegant loggia of San Giovanni with heroic marble sculptures. Above it rises the short squat Venetian clock-tower with exterior bell and two metal bell-ringers.
