On Hwy-101, 44 miles North of Healdsburg. A workaday lumber town occupying a deep, verdant valley, Ukiah unexpectedly harbors an outstanding art and ethnographical collection spread across the 4-acre site of the Grace Hudson Museum and Sun House (www.gracehudsonmuseum.org; open Wednesday – Saturday 10 am to 4.30 pm; Sunday noon to 4.30 pm; fee) 431 Main St. Grace Carpenter Hudson won great acclaim for her emotive paintings of Pomno Indians, a selection of which is displayed here, while her husband’s research into Native American cultures did much to foster a wider appreciation and understanding of the lifestyles of the earliest Californians.
Detour – Willits
On Hwy-101, 28 miles North of Ukiah. A down-to-earth country town set on a forested hillside, Willits marks the eastern end of the Skunk Train route from Fort Bragg. Even if you arrive by car, take a look at the picturesque wooden railway station
