Vallo di Nera

Swabian fiefdom

Heart of the Valnerina. The town’s coat of arms, three castles, recalls the days when Vallo’s Swabian overlords ruled the roost in Umbria. Even Vallo’s castle is now a hoary ruin. From the river bridge there are quiet walks along the reaches of the Nera. A more strenuous expedition on foot is east over the Coscerno range of hills to Roccaporena (birthplace of Saint Rita) and Cascia (see Eastern Appenines).
