Veii
Ancient painted tomb
You make out the lines of an ancient swimming-pool and the stalls of a sanctuary. Continue along the narrow road to Ponte di Formello. Here is a 75-m Etruscan rock tunnel on the bed of a rivulet. The Bell tomb, a frescoed chamber, is in the hillside above. Closer to Portonaccio, at Riserva di Bagno, are a few tombs lined up on terraces. They include the Tomb of the Geese, believed to be the oldest painted tomb in the region. Ancient Veio was a buffer city against Rome and the first to fall in the Roman conquest (369 BC).
