Villanovaforru

Prehistoric houses and workshops

The Genna Maria, a major nuragfie complex recently excavated, consists of prehistoric houses and workshops surrounding the central cone. Shards and pots of futuristic design suggest this was an important ceramics centre. There are hopes that this site will yield information about the nuraghi builders, of whom so little is known. Local archaeology is well displayed and cleverly expounded in a newish architect-designed museum which is putting the town on the map. Ales, 19 km north, a centre of farming, has a piazza designed by the modern sculptor Pomodoro and dedicated to Antonio Gramsci, whose writings inspired Mussolini in much the same way that those of Nietzsche inspired Hitler.
