Villefranche-sur-Mer
Fishing port turned smart resort
www.tourisme-villefranche-sur-mer.com. Occasionally dwarfed by warships anchored in its deep water bay, Villefranche’s little fishing port is the deceptively modest heart of a smart resort. Take a stroll around the picturesque 17thC Old Town with its narrow streets and unusual 13thC rue Obscure, which wends its way underneath the buildings; then make for the Chapelle Saint-Pierre overlooking the harbour. Jean Cocteau decorated this simple medieval fishermen’s chapel in 1957, adorning it with scenes of Camarguian gypsies, the womenfolk of Villefranche and of the life of St Peter.
