Vittorio Veneto
Where Italy defeated Austria, 1918
Ever-memorable for the greatest feat of Italian arms, the victory over the Austrians in 1918, this town encompasses two communities, Ceneda and Serravalle. The latter, in a gorge, has a cathedral with a Titian alterpiece and fine frescos at the church of Sant’ Andrea.
Detour – Bosco del Consiglio
On Route 422, about 18km north-east of Vittorio Veneto, is a regional novelty: a magnificent beech and pine forest, the third largest in Italy, called Bosco del Consiglio or ‘Council Wood’. Note that Vittorio doesn’t mean ‘victory’ as you might suppose. It honours Vittorio Emanuele I, first king of Italy (1866).
