Weed
Lumber town
On 1-5, 64 miles North of Redding. This place is for the most part as exciting as its name suggests, and its clear the locals have a sense of humour – their town sign proclaims ‘Weed like to welcome you’. The tiny community, about 3,000 strong, boasts the worthy Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum (www.siskiyous.edu/museum), 303 Gilman Avenue, a collection and celebration of the industry which brought the town into existence during the 1920s. Also here, the Black Butte Saloon (www.blackbuttesaloon.com), 259 Main Street, stores motley items of 1920s memorabilia and stakes its claim to have been Weed’s first bank. Once a year they hold a Festival, Carnevale, usually in June or July, where there are rides, a parade, music etc – check out this website for future dates – www.weedchamber.com/events.
