Whim Creek

Iron ore

100 km east of Cossack on the North West Coastal Highway. This tiny remote spot has little to recommend it but its name – which does not (entirely) describe the reason for its inclusion on this site. Whim Creek is a historic site: the location of the first big mineral find in the Pilbara region. This vast, largely barren territory (see photo) covers the mountainous shoulder of north-western Australia, and is now one of the major iron ore exporting regions in the world.

The creek itself winds its whimsical way to the sea at Balla Balla 20 km away.
