Whyalla

Busy steel port

77 km south of Port Augusta on the Spencer Gulf. This busy steel port is the fourth most populous town in South Australia, with a population of almost 22,000. If you like steel works (tours leave from Whyalla Visitor Centre 9.30, Mon, Wed, Fri; +61 8 8645 7900, for more info click here), watching bulk carriers and tankers (they also have a thriving gas refinery), and shipping monuments (the minesweeper Whyalla is the town mascot), then this is the place for you. Take your last swim at a pleasant local beach here before starting the long drive west down the Eyre Highway, across the arbor Plain: it’s a particularly pleasant drive in retrospect, after a thousand or so kilometres.
