Woomera

National Missile Park

170 km north west of Port Augusta on the Stuart Highway. This odd settlement lies at the southern border of the Woomera Prohibited Area or WPA. In the 1950s and 1960s atomic bombs were tested here, and the firing of experimental rockets. Indeed, Woomera itself has only been open to the public since 1982 but is now a tourist destination, many go to visit the National Missile Park. Much more informative is the local Woomera Heritage and Visitor centre (open daily 9 am to 5 pm, entry fee).
