This section lies north of a line drawn east-west just north of Addis Ababa and includes: Lake Tana; Gondar; Axum; Tigrai and the Gheralta Mountains; the Danakil Depression and Lalibela. These are usually agreed to be the best places to visit and are often described as the Northern Circuit. Access is typically by a flight from Addis to Bahir Dar on Lake Tana and then a flight from Mekele back to Addis.

A place of great charm, built of stone like everything in Tigray, Gheralta is deliberately simple, African/Italian in style and relaxing. Breakfast was below average on our visit, with no fruit.
