Acquarossa

Traces of Etruscan private dwellings

To reach from Viterbo, leave the main route by Viale Francesco Baracca. Etruscan town older than Viterbo, destroyed and abandoned about 500 BC. Unusually, traces of private dwellings have been found. The late King Gustavus of Sweden, a passionate Etruscologist, was reported to have uncovered a house near the warm springs. While insisting on gorgeous stone chambers for their dead, the Etruscans when alive inhabited timber houses, hence their rarity today. Clay and tile decorations from Acquarossa are in the Villa Giulia Museum in Rome.
