Bruny Island

Fine scenery, woodland and beaches

To get here take the ferry from Kettering, which is 30 km south of Hobart. Bruny Island is 70 km long and consists of two almost-islands (North Bruny and South Bruny) joined by a narrow isthmus. It’s a great place for hiking and lonely beaches. On a sand dune at the start of the isthmus you’ll see a monument to Truganini, the last Tasmanian Aborigine. Further on down the isthmus you can sometimes encounter fairy penguins.

Of the two islands, South Bruny has the finest scenery, woodlands and beaches. The best overnight stays are at Allonnah, which is on the west coast of South Bruny.
